2019 Pieceable Retreat

This year we are excited to be moving to a new location.... The Beach!!!

Join us Thursday, October 24th - Sunday, October 27th

for a week-end of quilting, fellowship, and fun!

Check-in and registration will begin at 4pm on Thursday afternoon and classes will begin Friday morning at 9am.  The hotel and classes will be at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton (843) 315-7100 in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Attendees need to reserve their rooms separately from the retreat registration.  You can go ahead and call the DoubleTree now to reserve your room (you can also reserve a room on-line:  http://group.doubletree.com/QuiltersSouthCarolina ).  Use the code 'QSC' to receive our discounted rate for your stay.

More details will be provided in our Spring QSC newsletter.  Registration for classes will be sent out via email blast to all current members some time in May.  With our new location, we expect classes to fill up quickly so be sure to have the class you would like picked out so you are ready to register!  Below is information on the classes offered this year, more details on each class will be added soon!

3 Day Classes (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Ruler Work on a Domestic Machine by Darlene Roberts









This year lets add structured texture and design to a quick to construct table/bed runner on Friday morning, practice marking, how to handle/position rulers in the afternoon on Friday. Saturday we will continue to practice (if needed) then design, mark and begin quilting our sampler made on Friday. We will learn how to stitch in the ditch (SID) without a walking foot to stabilize your piece prior to quilting. Sunday will be more practice and a wrap up. Some rulers will be provided to try and others will be suggested prior for purchase.

Fan Fair by Joanne Shropshire

  • Intermediate

  • Ruler Required

This quilt was designed to be made with strips and using the diamond ruler. We will turn our strips into beautiful blocks. The diamond ruler will also be used to make the other shapes we will need to complete the quilt fun quilt with a twist on some traditional blocks. Quilt has a modern feel but uses traditional piecing.

Shimmer by Dee Doebler

  • Intermediate to Experienced

  • Design Wall Needed

By using only half square triangles, you will discover ways of blending your fabrics so that you can create the shimmering watercolor effect for this spectacular quilt!  You will also be shown various ways to create your half square triangles.  This a color design class and you will only be working on small sections at a time.  Design wall is a MUST.   This class suits intermediate to experienced quilters.                                                                                             

Morning Sunrise by Judy Lilly

Judy is an experienced teacher with a wealth of knowledge to share. Her self-created patterns are loved by all and she will be in touch with ideas for fabric selections. There is a $10 pattern fee and a machine is required for class.

Collage Your Favorite Animal by Ruth Pollow

Ruth is a wonderful and patient teacher. She is going to be in touch with you to help you select an appropriate photo and help you manipulate that photo into the proper format before class. Class will focus on fabric selection and manipulation into creating a realistic representation of the animal you selected. The background will also be created during class and on the last day, thread painting and quilting will be the focus.

2 Day Classes

Curves and Corners by Cindy Page (Fri/Sat)

  • Intermediate Level

Cindy is back to teach another wonderful class. Everyone that takes a class with Cindy says not only do you learn a wonderful pattern and technique but so many extra tips on the side! This class has a template as a requirement and can be made in many different colorways.  There is a handout charge of $5. 

Movement In Squares by Daune Walker (Fri/Sat)

  • Intermediate Level

  • Pattern $6

Daune (pronounced Dawn) is a generous and thoughtful teacher. You will have so much fun in her class!This is a unique contemporary quilt pattern. Blocks are interchangeable which gives you several setting options. The pattern is $5.

Shattered by Vicki McCormick (Fri/Sat)

  • All Levels

  • Pattern $13

Vicki is a long time QSC member. This is a modern quilt that lends itself to a color-wash or any other color family of your choice. This quilt is also appropriate for all levels of quilters from beginners to experienced. The pattern is $13.

Strip Tease by Virginia Schrenker (Fri/Sat)

  • Beginner Level and Above

  • Pattern supplied by teacher

Virginia is well-loved teacher that has been a member of QSC for a very long time. This quilt is suitable for all levels of quilters. This pattern, Mind the Gap, is a free pattern from Moda Fabrics designed by Lisa Christensen. It makes a stunning modern quilt made up of 8 large blocks.  The pattern used solids, but prints or other fabrics  that read as solids work equally well.  I used fall colors of Grunge fabrics in my sample.  It’s a great way to use all blue, greens, or any colors of your choice.  We will make a 56” X 68” lap quilt.  Most students will be able to finish the top during the retreat.  The pattern will be supplied by the teacher.

My Quilting Companion by Mary Kelley (Sat/Sun)

  • Intermediate to Advanced

Mary was an apprentice doll maker and has designed these adorable dolls to be completed at Retreat. This project is suited for a beginner as Mary states that she is willing to help anyone that loves dolls develop the techniques required to pursue that love. Patterns will be provided and modified as needed. Mary will be sending list of supplies required and will have many, many fun items with her to use during the class.

Single Day Classes

Embellish Your World by Susan Edmondson (Fri)

  • All Levels

  • No Machine Required

  • Hand Work

Susan is a national teacher and has had her items featured in numerous venues. She will also be vending so as you are working on her delicious pattern  you will be able to pick up even more fun items to add. Susan is a delightful and happy person to take a class from. If you have ever wanted to try a whimsical hand project, this would be the class to try.

Perfect Endings by Karen Kendo (Sun)

  • All Levels

  • Kit $20

Have you ever wondered how to get your bindings to be full and flat? Do you struggle with your corners? If so, this is the class for you. Do you want wonderful bindings and corners for a quilt you are going to put in a judged show? This is the class for you. Karen is a wealth of knowledge. Bring your machine. She will show you how to set it up to achieve the correct width for YOUR machine every time.

Fun With Wool Embellishments by Sandra Baker (Sun)

  • All Levels

  • No Machine Required

  • Hand Work

Sandra does beautiful wool applique from wool she gathers at the thrift stores! She will share her wealth of knowledge in stiches, thread and resources! Come and sit with this wonderful lady and relax for a while.

African Queen by Lillie Fowler Singleton (Sun)

  • All Levels

Lillie will share the tips to get this block assembled and cutting tips so you will be able to assemble this beautifully graphic quilt. This quilt is an opportunity to use the fabrics in your stash that are simply to pretty to cut in the dresses of these women. A kit will be offered to aid in the piecing.

Making Molas Modern by Veronica Moriarity (Sun)

  • Kit $3

Veronica will be teaching a class in Mola making. Molas have a history that she will share in her class that women have used a sense of empowerment for years. Veronica’s work is impeccable and this is a wonderful technique class. This is a class that will allow you to have a project to take with you anywhere.
